Where we work
The Three Estates are part of the Kings Norton ward in south-west Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The area takes its name from the three housing estates of: Hawkesley, Primrose and Pool Farm. Poverty and disadvantage are embedded into the fabric of life for many of the residents on the estates. The area is within the 10% most deprived on the Index of Deprivation for 2010. In 2000 the three estates were allocated £50 million funding as part of the government's New Deal for communities programme which ended in 2010. Despite the injection of funds into the estates many of the social and economic challenges identified through the New Deal programme remain. The estates continue to suffer disproportionately in terms of high unemployment, poor health, high levels of crime, anti social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse, financial illiteracy, post code stigmatisation, families in poverty and crisis and low levels of community engagement.
